Ingredients
- 1 1/2 cups unbleached white flour
- 1/2 cup milk
- 1/4 cup butter, unsalted
- 1 1/2 cups water
- 4 tsp. baking powder
- 1/2 tsp. salt
- 6 medium tart apples, i.e Granny Smith, Honeycrisp
- 3/4 cup sugar
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
- Butter a 9" x 13" baking dish or any large baking dish with sides.
- Core and peel the apples and set aside.
- Sift dry ingredients into a large bowl. Work in the butter and then add enough milk to make a soft dough.
- Place on a floured working surface. Clean up is a breeze by using a large pastry mat* Roll out and cut into 6 inch squares.
- In the centre of each square place one apple. Cover with a tablespoon of sugar.
- Draw up the pastry corners. Moisten the corners, twist and pinch together. For a showstopper finish, form the pastry around the apple, and add leaves, brushed with egg wash to help them adher.
- Place side by side in the prepared baking dish. Pour over the water and remainder of sugar. Occasionally baste the apples
- Bake for about 45 minutes or until crisp and well baked
- Remove and serve hot with the liquid in the pan.
