Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cups unbleached white flour
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1/4 cup butter, unsalted
  • 1 1/2 cups water
  • 4 tsp. baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 6 medium tart apples, i.e Granny Smith, Honeycrisp
  • 3/4 cup sugar

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
  • Butter a 9" x 13" baking dish or any large baking dish with sides.
  • Core and peel the apples and set aside.
  • Sift dry ingredients into a large bowl. Work in the butter and then add enough milk to make a soft dough.
  • Place on a floured working surface. Clean up is a breeze by using a large pastry mat* Roll out and cut into 6 inch squares.
  • In the centre of each square place one apple. Cover with a tablespoon of sugar.
  • Draw up the pastry corners. Moisten the corners, twist and pinch together. For a showstopper finish, form the pastry around the apple, and add leaves, brushed with egg wash to help them adher.
  • Place side by side in the prepared baking dish. Pour over the water and remainder of sugar. Occasionally baste the apples
  • Bake for about 45 minutes or until crisp and well baked
  • Remove and serve hot with the liquid in the pan.
