Apple dumplings were a popular dessert in post WWI Britain. King George V was specially fond of this delicious sweet treat, and would have them at court whenever he could.

1 1/2cupsunbleached white flour
1/2cupmilk
1/4cupbutter, unsalted
1 1/2cupswater
4tsp.baking powder
1/2tsp.salt
6mediumtart apples,i.e Granny Smith, Honeycrisp
3/4cupsugar

Instructions
Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
Butter a 9" x 13" baking dish or any large baking dish with sides.
Core and peel the apples and set aside.
Sift dry ingredients into a large bowl. Work in the butter and then add enough milk to make a soft dough.
Place on a floured working surface. Clean up is a breeze by using a large pastry mat* Roll out and cut into 6 inch squares.
In the centre of each square place one apple. Cover with a tablespoon of sugar.
Draw up the pastry corners. Moisten the corners, twist and pinch together.
For a showstopper finish, form the pastry around the apple, and add leaves, brushed with egg wash to help them adher.
Place side by side in the prepared baking dish. Pour over the water and remainder of sugar.
Occasionally baste the apples
Bake for about 45 minutes or until crisp and well baked
Remove and serve hot with the liquid in the pan.
