Food Ideas You Can Use for Dinner Parties Based on Ancient Cultures

downtonabbeycooks · December 20, 2024 ·

Basing a dinner party on a theme is a great idea, but it might also sound extremely difficult to get right. By looking at a few of the basic ideas, we can see that this idea can be a lot of fun as well as being easier than you might think.

Greek Mythology with Amusing Pythagorean Cups

There are some easy options for adding Greek flavour to a dinner menu. These include olives, olive oil, moussaka, and gyros. To make it feel more authentic, you could write the guest’s names on place cards in ancient Greek using an online translator. If you want to add some humour to the evening, homemade Pythagorean cups have a clever mechanism that drains the contents if it’s filled up too much, which makes for a nice talking point about the legacy of the philosopher but can get messy.

If you want to add some ancient Greek images to the room, you could look for ideas online or by watching movies like Troy and 300. Many of the characters from this culture are instantly recognisable to most people, with the British Museum showing an excellent range of artefacts as well as a virtual tour of Greek temples. You can find some classic images of Greek mythology in online slot games like Divine Fortune and Medusa Megaways. These games are set up like traditional slot machines but have symbols including Medusa, Pegasus and the Parthenon. Other popular slots based on different cultures include Book of Dead (Egypt) and Gonzo’s Quest (Aztec).

Ancient Egypt and Tiger Nut Cakes

A surprising amount of information is known about Ancient Egypt, as scientists have discovered what perfumes they wore and the jewellery that Cleopatra liked to use. In terms of the food, dates, figs and grapes are all good choices for getting the right mood. You might want to add some palm frond decoration to create a great look that makes everyone feel that they’ve been transported down by the Nile.

Meat wasn’t eaten by everyone, but fish was generally abundant in this culture. This recipe for a cake made with tiger nuts is worth looking at, although you might not find it easy to get hold of the ingredients. Add some extra atmosphere by looking for ancient Egyptian music on YouTube or by streaming a movie like 1963’s opulent Cleopatra in the background.

An Inca Evening with Panpipes

Potatoes, corn and quinoa are a few of the everyday Inca ingredients you might want to use to make this dinner more authentic. This simple recipe for Inca Quinoa Delight uses many of the traditional foods of the time, although it also has more modern ingredients like some spices that didn’t arrive in the New World until the European explorers reached there. Soothing Inca music made with panpipes is ideal for background music and is easily found online.
Creating the right food and atmosphere for a dinner party based on an ancient culture should be a lot of fun. With so many ideas to be found online, you can investigate as much or as little as you want to.
