The Psychology of Small Luxuries: Why We Gravitate Toward Treats We Can Control

downtonabbeycooks · May 26, 2025 ·

We’ve all found ourselves enjoying a piece or two of fine chocolate, a glass of wine or a few minutes of peace and quiet. Whilst this may not seem like much, luxuries such as these can help save the day during stressful or unpredictable times. But why do we gravitate toward these tiny treats? Here’s the psychology behind our attraction to small indulgences.

Small Comforts Have Significant Impact

When people are unable to justify spending money due to employment changes or economic instability, micro-luxuries become the next best option. This is known as the ‘Lipstick Effect’, a term coined in 2001 when Estée Lauder Chairman Leonard Lauder observed a rise in lipstick sales in response to economic downturn.

The Lipstick Effect reveals that people will indulge in small luxuries when times are rough as a way to boost their mood. Purchasing and enjoying even the most seemingly insignificant item (like lipstick) adds beauty and joy to daily life. This effect is also supported by science.

How Micro-Luxuries Affect Mental Health

When we purchase a small but luxurious treat, what we are actually engaging in is self-care; we are making our enjoyment and well-being a priority. This explains the good feelings we experience when buying and enjoying these treats. But according to science, there’s much more going on behind the scenes.

When we experience the Lipstick Effect, we also experience positive effects on our mood. These may last for several hours or days afterward. Hand in hand with this mood boost are the reduction of stress and a more positive outlook on life overall.

As well, small indulgences can even make us more creative and productive, thanks to their effectiveness at eliminating stress. When this occurs, improved levels of cognition are the result.

Indulging in these luxuries also helps us to feel in control during times of instability without the commitment of greater financial cost. It also allows us to ‘have our cake and eat it too’, by getting us the luxury we crave as we preserve our frugality.

Where and How to Indulge

Regardless of how busy your life may have become or how small your budget may be currently, there are many ways to incorporate small indulgences. However, remember that any treat you enjoy should be something that’s important and feels good to you and you alone. Everyone is different, so the following suggestions are definitely not a one-size-fits-all solution.

At Home

The quickest and easiest way to enjoy mini luxuries at home is to focus on a relaxing space to make your own. This could be a corner of the backyard, a deck or a sunroom. Fill this space with the things you love – perhaps that cosy throw you got at last year’s boot sale, a favourite chair or a vintage radio you can listen to footie on.

At Work

Changing your scenery, even for a few minutes, definitely counts as a luxury. Consider leaving your office during lunch and breaks to take a walk or sit in your car. This will help you to re-centre and re-focus. Also consider that every drawer in your desk has treat-stashing capability, where you can store your favourite snacks and treats for daily joy.

Consider a Routine Revamp

If your before and after work routines feel old and withered, it may be because they are. Think about the little things, like your morning cuppa. If a store brand just isn’t cutting it, take things up a notch and invest a few more quid into a higher-quality brand. The same goes for your mugs; choose or purchase a favourite and enhance your enjoyment even further.

Don’t Dismiss the Digital Escape

Digital escapes have the same effect as retreating to a favourite physical space or indulging in a treat. They remove you from dull surroundings, allowing you to refresh and renew, even if only for a few minutes.

Playing a favourite mobile game to beat a high score or indulging in Boku mobile billing casino sites for a quick wager are two examples of frictionless gaming. They can be accessed quickly, offer low-effort entertainment and don’t add stress. In the case of the latter option, convenience is enhanced further. You have the opportunity to win real money and pay through your mobile phone bill. No credit card is required.

Pencil It In

If your life is super busy and it feels like there’s no time for luxury, think again. There’s no shame in adding little reminders to your calendar. Is there a nature spot or cafe near your work or home that you’ve always wanted to visit but never seem to have time for? Schedule it for a time of the day that you’re already available, such as lunch. You can even make it a weekly date with a single rule: no guilt allowed.

Free Counts, Too!

Whilst the word ‘luxury’ may bring to mind items that cost money, literally anything, including no-cost experiences, can add joy to your life. Think about a day at the beach with or without the fam, forest bathing or simply engaging in conscious breathing. If it’s something you love that relaxes you and brings you peace and joy, it counts as a luxury.

Living your best life includes taking care of and celebrating you. Indulge in a mini luxury today, and you’ll enjoy a better mood and reduced stress.
